5 Influential BIPOC Mental Health Advocates

In celebration of February being Black History Month, we’d like to highlight a few BIPOC who are making history today, by changing the face of therapy and shifting the dialogue regarding mental health in the most positive way!

Here are 5 Influential BIPOC Mental Health Advocates of Today:

1.  Dr. Jennifer Mullan 

Dr. Jennifer Mullan, Psy.D is a clinical psychologist whose work primarily focuses on the vital need to discuss the effects of systemic inequities on the mental health of Queer Indigenous Black Brown People of Color (QIBPOC). Dr. Mullan is the founder of Decolonizing Therapy, a mental health support platform that offers resources as well as discussion on the presence of systematic oppression within the training of mental health professionals and the overall process of therapy. Over the years, Dr. Mullins has been changing the face of mental health by making it her mission to decolonize mental

health and participate in work that is meant for people to heal and oppose oppression.

2.  Rachel Cargle   

Rachel Cargle, public academic, writer and lecturer, is known for her activism as well as academic work revolving around the connection between race and feminism. As founder and President of The Loveland Foundation, Cargle has established an organization that provides mental health resources and support, including access to therapy, to Black women and girls. The hope of both Cargle and the mission of The Loveland Foundation, is to provide freedom and empowerment to their communities.

3.  Dr. Joy Harden Bradford  

Dr. Joy Harden Bradford is a wonder at illustrating psychological concepts by example of pop culture. Dr. Joy is a licensed psychologist, speaker, author, media personality and host of the popular podcast, Therapy for Black Girls. Her work primarily focuses on establishing relevance of mental health topics and creating accessibility of resources to Black women. Dr. Joy also emphasizes through her work that mental health doesn’t always have to pertain to mental illness, but instead, should encompass the importance of mental wellness as well.

4. Sahaj Kohli

Sahaj started the Instagram account @browngirltherapy which has amassed over 150k followers. The goal of her community is to promote therapy for bicultural people, especially children of immigrants. She was formerly an editor at Huffington post. She is a huge advocate for the BIPOC and mental health communities. Check her instagram page out for more!

5. Lauren Ash

Lauren is the founder of the website Black Girl In Om. Founded in 2014, the goal of the site is to provide meditation courses to black women. Her stated goal is to “rewrite the narrative of what well-being looks like.” The website also features inspirational and educational articles and Lauren has hosted a podcast with the same theme. These 5, truly influential BIPOC mental health advocates are establishing an awareness that allows for positivity to be associated with mental health. They are providing knowledge and the necessary resources to the BIPOC community, in addition to the mental health community in general. The world of mental health is becoming a more empowered and encouraging place due to their work and advocacy.
