Managing Stress by Adding a Positive Perspective
We can all recognize the feeling of stress. The feeling of heavy weight promptly placed upon our shoulders as we suddenly have too much on our plate, or feel as if we are consistently living in a world of time crunch. But what we may not realize is how our terminology, and the way we vocalize our stress, only enhances its negative grip on our minds. Simply swapping just a few words in our thoughts and sentences regarding our stress, can instantly change our perspective!
In this article, we’re sharing a few examples of how stressful situations can quickly become positive perceptions with just a little alteration to our vocabulary!
Stressful Sentence: I have to finish writing my book.
New Perspective: I get to create something that is uniquely my own.
Stressful Sentence: I need to apply to graduate school.
New Perspective: I get to start a new chapter in my life where I can grow as a
creative and a professional.
Stressful Sentence: I have to start over in a brand new city.
New Perspective: I get to meet new people, see new places, and take advantage of
Stressful Sentence: There’s not enough time in the day to get all of my work and assignments done.
New Perspective: I’m presented with the opportunity to practice time management skills and truly stay focused.
Now while it may seem corny at first glance, and possibly too simple of a solution to actually reduce and manage our stressful lives, the practice of shifting our perspectives and implementing positive language can only reinforce positivity throughout our day. Corny or not, give it a shot! The next time you find yourself vocalizing your stress in a negative manner, take a moment to reframe your thought and see what positive perspective can be brought to the table. It can’t hurt!
